چکیده

Applying soil amendments with high C content can potentially improve properties and increase crop yields. The objective of this 3-yr field study was to evaluate the effects organic on (SOC), chemical properties, nutrient uptake, yields in a low sandy loam near Scottsbluff, NE. planted dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) 2017, maize (Zea mays 2018, sugar beet (Beta 2019. Char at 22.3, 44.6, 66.9, 89.2, 133.8 Mg ha–1; biochar 5.6 11.2 composted manure municipal compost each 33.6 67.2 ha–1 were applied incorporated into soil. In 1 yr after application, increased SOC level top 20 cm by 7–60%. second year, leaf tissue Fe greater char treatments rate compared control. Greater uptake or trend for such observed amendment rates control third year. Maize yield enhanced char, compost, rate. Biochar lower than other amendments, it had no parameters studied. Results suggest that locally available products be potential enhance productivity. Care needs taken prevent salt buildup unwanted toxic material accumulation associated amendments.

Nitrogen deposition alters nitrogen cycling and reduces soil carbon content in low-productivity semiarid Mediterranean ecosystems.

Anthropogenic N deposition poses a threat to European Mediterranean ecosystems. We combined data from an extant N deposition gradient (4.3-7.3 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹) from semiarid areas of Spain and a field experiment in central Spain to evaluate N deposition effects on soil fertility, function and cyanobacteria community. Soil organic N did not increase along the extant gradient. Nitrogen fixation de...

Non-traditional legumes as potential soil amendments for nematode control.

Dried ground plant tissues from 20 leguminous species were mixed with Meloidogyne incognita-infested soil at 1, 2 or 2.5, and 5% (w/w) and incubated for 1 week at room temperature (21 to 27 degrees C). Tomato ('Rutgers') seedlings were transplanted into infested soil to determine nematode viability. Most tissues reduced gall numbers below the non-amended controls. The tissue amendments that wer...

Improving Almond Productivity under Deficit Irrigation in Semiarid Zones

Sustainable water use is one of the greatest challenges of irrigated agricultural systems. This study presents the results related to the agronomic and physiological response to the deficit irrigation of almond trees (Prunus dulcis DA Webb Mill cv. Guara) under semiarid Mediterranean conditions in the Guadalquivir river basin (SW Spain). Two deficitirrigation strategies were tested: i) regulate...

Soil Amendments for Agricultural Production

The word organic, applied to fertilizers, indicates that the nutrients are derived from the remains or by‐products of a once‐living organism. Farmers are continually searching for alternatives to synthetic inorganic fertilizers to alleviate the escalating production costs associated with the increasing costs of energy and fertilizers and the problems of soil and surface water deterioration asso...
